A Sign Of Agreement
Genesis 17:1-14

The study of the lesson is in the book of Genesis Chapter 17: Verses 1-14 and it continues the study about the signs of God’s covenant, circumcision.

Key Verse: “This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Everyman child among you shall be circumcised.” Genesis 17:10, KJV: This scripture reveals God used circumcision to ratify an everlasting covenant between God and Abraham to make his descendants prosperous, in their righteous walk with God.

The lesson topic for Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017 is “A Sign of Agreement” and this lesson reveals the inward heart of an individual is more important than what we are like outwardly. Paul refers to it as the circumcision of the heart.

The objective for students and readers is to live to show inner commitment and loyalty to God.

Covenant Provisions (Genesis 17:1-8)

The lesson unfolds when Abram is ninety nine years old. God appeared to him with a command and an unconditional covenant. This Covenant offered three specific provisions: 1) Walk before me and be thou perfect and I will multiply thee exceedingly. 2) You will be the father of many nations and your name will be called Abraham. 3) God promised to him and his descendants the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession and be their God. “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.” (Verses 1-8)

Covenant Signs within People (Genesis 17:9-14)

These verses reveal how God confirmed with Abraham and his seed after him in their generations make clear that each child should have an inward commitment of obedience and loyalty to God. This lesson is an excellent example of how each of us should experience circumcision of the heart and renew our commitment to our Lord and Savior. “And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.” (Verse 9-14)
