LeMoyne-Owen College Among HBCUs To Participate In ‘Show Me Your Walk’ Virtual Commencement
Ceremony To feature President Barack Obama As Commencement Speaker
On Saturday, May 16, 2020, 2 p.m. EST

LeMoyne-Owen College is one of 78 Historically Black Colleges and Universities that will participate in Show Me Your Walk, a virtual commencement sponsored by CHASE featuring President Barack Obama on Saturday, May 16 at 2 p.m. (EST). The commencement, sponsored by JP Morgan Chase and HBCU education partners, The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), will air via Chase’s social media platforms, ESSENCE Studios and HBCU Connect Facebook.
The commencement will also include an awesome list of speakers and performers, including financial expert and investor, Mellody Hobson and comedian, Kevin Hart. Follow-up weekend events also include an #HBCUGradParty with D-Nice via Instagram and an HBCU Family Cookout powered by Facebook.
“While we are disappointed that we are unable to recognize our students’ accomplishments with the traditional pomp and circumstance, we are pleased that this option is available to them to celebrate themselves,” Dr. Carol Johnson Dean, LOC interim president says. “We thank the generous partners involved in this effort for recognizing HBCU graduates, specifically, and we plan to celebrate with an in-person commencement ceremony once it is safe to gather together again in large crowds.”
HBCUs produce 70% of African American doctors and dentists, 50% of black lawyers and 80% of black judges. HBCU graduates can also expect work-life earnings of $130 billion—an additional $927,000 per graduate, 56 percent more than they could expect to earn without their HBCU degrees or certificates, according to UNCF.
